Custom Knits

striped cotton vest baby raglan sweater with red and white stripes tea cozy with Aran patterns

If you can't find what you want among my regular products, please contact me. I have knitted almost everything imaginable and enjoy variety. You can see examples of special custom knits in the Custom Knits Gallery.

Why custom knits?

I can think of four different situations where you might want a custom knit:

  1. You like a regular stock item, but want a different size, color, or material. This is easy! I can scale a baby sweater up to fit a lumberjack. In this case, the only change in price will be to reflect differences in the yarn used and time involved.

  2. You see a knitting pattern that you love, but you can't/won't knit it yourself. This is also pretty easy. Just send me the pattern, or tell me where to find it. I will quote you a price, and you decide whether to proceed.

  3. You describe what you're looking for, and I search out patterns that might fit the bill. You choose which you like, I quote a price, and you decide whether to proceed. This situation will obviously be more time-consuming than the first two, so don't take this route if you need the item by the end of the month! There may be an extra charge for research time.

  4. You want something so special and unique that you're sure there is no pattern anywhere! You describe it to me in detail (pictures or drawings are helpful), and I figure out how to make it. This process can be wonderfully fun and satisfying for both of us, but it does require some time. There will be an extra charge for the time spent creating the design.

Please let me know what your needs/wishes are. Almost anything is possible!

How do we plan an order for custom knits?

  1. You tell me what you’re looking for. We discuss options: pattern, design details, size, color(s), materials.

  2. I quote a price, which may include a design fee. I break down the quote for you: design fee, production of garment, shipping costs.

  3. If you accept the price, you provide 50% of the total and I begin the work.

  4. I keep you informed of my progress. If appropriate, I may send you snippets of yarn to approve, or graphs and diagrams of the design to approve. Major changes at this point could affect the final cost (e.g., you want a sweater instead of a scarf!), but I wait for your consent to the price change before proceeding.

  5. When the item is complete, I let you know and you provide the remaining 50% of the total.

  6. I deliver the item to you. I very much appreciate feedback on all my knits, but especially on custom orders.
